Course DescriptionBibleSecond grade uses God and My Actions, an ACSI curriculum, to introduce the students to the Word of God. The lessons are taught with two or three week studies of the Bible heroes. Each lesson focuses on character traits and how they apply to the students’ lives. Second graders become familiar with Books of the Bible and how to locate verses in the Bible. ReadingThe goal of the reading program in Second grade is to effectively teach the students to develop greater oral fluency and comprehension so they can read a variety of literature types. This is accomplished through the Open Court Reading Series and supplemental chapters. Throughout the lessons students also ask questions, discuss, research, write about, and think about the concepts and ideas of what they have read. MathThe goals of the second math program are achieved by using the Saxon Math 2 curriculum. Basic concepts such as addition, mastery in subtraction, multiplication, time, money, and graphing are presented in increments and integrated throughout the year. The program is success oriented and hands-on with the use of a variety of manipulatives. Language ArtsThe Language Arts Program provides students with many opportunities to produce a variety of written material. The writing traits and the writing process are strategies the students use to develop greater skills in communicating effectively. Narrative, descriptive, persuasive and creative writings and poems become a part of their portfolios in second grade. A musical production of the life of Harriet Tubman is a favorite trip for second graders. Social StudiesThe goal of second grade is to provide a comprehensive program in the eight strands of social studies. These include lessons on the past, meeting needs and wants, people and places of the earth, leaders and laws, rules and responsibility, the way of life shared by a group of people, new ideas and tools changing the way people live, and reading, thinking and studying. We Live Together by McMillan/McGraw-Hill is used as a text and lessons are enhanced with projects and field trips to Hagley Museum and Herr’s Snack Factory. ScienceThe goal of the science program in second grade is to provide the students with opportunities to explore and experience God’s creation in life science, earth science, and physical science. A Scott Foresman text is used to accomplish these goals along with hands-on science experiments and science fair held in the spring.
